Method, assumptions and limits

In Canada, displayed prices are generally before tax. The calculator therefore starts from the prices you will see (accommodation, car rental, meals, activities) and adds:

  • the chosen province’s total sales tax (from 5% in Alberta to 15% in several Atlantic provinces), based on Canada Revenue Agency rates;
  • the tip on the share of meals eaten at restaurants, calculated on the pre-tax amount;
  • the eTA fee (C$7 per traveller) if you are flying in.

Fuel is counted as displayed at the pump, since its taxes are already included. Flights and insurance, paid in euros, are converted at the exchange rate entered (C$1.6 per €1 by default, to adjust).

Limits

  • The travel-style values are indicative starting points, to replace with your actual quotes.
  • Some cities add an accommodation tax and some products are zero-rated: the calculation uses the general rate.
  • A trip across several provinces mixes several rates: choose the one where you will spend the most.
