Editorial policy, methodology and corrections
How we choose sources, check figures, build our tools and correct our mistakes.
Our principles
- Useful first: a page is only published if it answers a specific question better than existing resources.
- Primary sources: we cite official bodies first (IRCC, CRA, Revenu Québec, CBSA, provincial governments, French authorities).
- Dates: every guide shows when it was updated and when its facts were checked.
- Clear levels of information: we separate official rules, estimates and illustrative examples.
- No guaranteed outcome: we never claim an application or process will succeed.
How we check
Figures (tax rates, tax tables, fees, caps) are taken from the official source and the date is recorded. Tool data is kept in dedicated files, so it can be updated in one go when a rule changes. Last general check of figures: .
Translation
English pages are translations of the French originals, reviewed by the editorial team. Canadian terminology follows the official English names used by federal and provincial governments. When an English page is not yet available, the language switcher sends you to the English home page rather than to an approximate translation.
Our calculators
Each tool publishes its method, assumptions, limits and sources on its own page. Calculations are tested against standard cases before publication. Default values are starting points and are labelled as such.
Updates and corrections
We review content when rules change (new tax tables on January 1, federal and provincial budgets, changes to immigration programs). If you spot a mistake, report it: we fix it and update the page date. Significant corrections are noted on the page concerned.
Authors and accountability
Content is signed by the FranceCanada editorial team. When an expert (tax adviser, lawyer, regulated consultant) reviews a page, their name and qualification are shown on it, with their consent.
Independence
Some links earn us a commission (referral codes, Amazon.ca links). They are always labelled “Partner link” and carry the rel="sponsored" attribute. No partner pays to appear in a comparison or to rank higher in one, and a paid link is never the reason for a recommendation. The details are in our policy on commercial links.
